Cordless Lamps Offer A Safe Alternative To Lighting Your Toddler’s Bedroom

December 30th, 2009

A life free from cords congregating behind your sofa, along the floor and everywhere else you can imagine? We should all be so lucky. You may not be able to deck your entire home in cordless bliss, but there are just some places where cords can be unsightly, not to mention dangerous. Anywhere in your home that you can eliminate safety hazard is a step in the right direction. You may also be surprised by the many different styles, colors and options that are available as rechargeable or battery operated cordless lamps.

Light panels are an immediate eye catcher in any room, not to mention a space saving miracle. These cordless lamps are actually flat, square panels that hang on the wall and light up in a myriad or colors, or in white only. This can actually solve more than one interior design problem, as you may have several blank walls you just don’t know what to do with. It’s often hard to find a light to hang on a wall because you have the cord hanging down, or you have to wire it into the wall directly. Cordless light panels are the perfect solution, especially for apartment and home renters that aren’t able to install permanent light fixtures.

Cordless lamps are spectacular in a child’s room, both for the fun colors and designs, as well as the safety aspect. Children, especially very young ones, may be curious to know what that cord sticking out of the wall does, followed immediately by the curiosity of what else they can fit in that hole. Stick cordless touch lamps in several places on the walls of the room. The child can simply press down on the light and turn it on. For young children, this is an accomplishment they might not have otherwise been able to do with a light switch or floor lamp twice as tall as they are.

Other cordless lamps are fun novelty light fixtures that are great at parties. What would your friends think if you presented them with a bottle of champagne on ice inside a glowing ice bucket? They serve a dual purpose by keeping your champagne warm and lighting up a table as a glowing centerpiece. These are great for weddings, especially if your theme is more fun and less frill. These lamps can go anywhere in your house and usually have to be recharged once a week or so, depending on how often you use it. Most importantly, you don’t have to worry about unsightly cords that can get caught up on everything, including your feet!

Lighting – Things to Consider Before You Buy

December 29th, 2009

When we think of home decorating, quite often we think of furniture and color schemes. Equally as important when decorating the home is that we consider lighting; the selection we make in lighting is crucial to both décor and function within our space.

You want your lighting to bring out the best decorative features of your home. You want your lighting to allow you to function in your home in practical ways at the same time. Here are a few things to consider when purchasing lighting:

How well is the space lit naturally? What do you spend your time doing in this particular space? Are there objects in the space that you want highlighted? Is your space outfitted for the type of lighting you want; are outlets easily accessed?

Once you have a general feel for the type of function your lighting will serve, then you’ll have a better understanding of what type of light fixtures your space requires and desires.

If you’re interested in overhead lighting, there are several types of ceiling fixtures that serve a variety of functions.

Chandeliers generally serve to provide the sole source of lighting in the room. They’re also often highly ornate fixtures, designed to bring out the room’s décor scheme. Chandeliers come in a variety of sizes, but are still generally reserved for larger rooms without a home. If you’re looking for overhead lighting for a smaller space, or for lighting that serves to light only a portion of the room, then you might consider pendant lighting. Pendants are excellent for lighting a limited space, and can be particularly useful for providing functional lighting in areas like the kitchen. If you’re seeking to provide general lighting for a small room, you might also consider flush mounts or decorative semi-flush mounts.

Table lamps and floor lamps add décor and lighting to smaller areas, or spaces that have ample natural light. Sconces are also an option to provide decorative lighting in areas such as hallways where only dim lighting is required.

While your lighting options may seem limitless, keep in mind functionality as much as décor; you’ll find that once you know what you need in lighting, what you want in lighting will become much clearer.
