When we think of home decorating, quite often we think of furniture and color schemes. Equally as important when decorating the home is that we consider lighting; the selection we make in lighting is crucial to both décor and function within our space.

You want your lighting to bring out the best decorative features of your home. You want your lighting to allow you to function in your home in practical ways at the same time. Here are a few things to consider when purchasing lighting:

How well is the space lit naturally? What do you spend your time doing in this particular space? Are there objects in the space that you want highlighted? Is your space outfitted for the type of lighting you want; are outlets easily accessed?

Once you have a general feel for the type of function your lighting will serve, then you’ll have a better understanding of what type of light fixtures your space requires and desires.

If you’re interested in overhead lighting, there are several types of ceiling fixtures that serve a variety of functions.

Chandeliers generally serve to provide the sole source of lighting in the room. They’re also often highly ornate fixtures, designed to bring out the room’s décor scheme.
