January 27th, 2010

A cable lighting kit is a good idea if you are looking to install some additional lighting in your home. The kit will usually include a transformer, cable, wall mounting hardware and some light bulbs. It is relatively easy to install as long as you follow the directions that are included with each kit. Another name for these kits is rope lighting. The lights are encased in a thick plastic case that protects the lights, thus making them quite durable. These can be installed both indoors and outdoors.

One of the more popular aspects of a cable lighting kit is that they are quite inexpensive. You may have noticed that around the Christmas holidays, many people use these types of lights for decorating. This is because of their flexibility and durability. Another use for these types of lights is to light up walkways or pathways at night as a safety feature. They provide enough light for people to see where they are walking.

You may also notice that many retail outlets have installed a cable lighting kit to enhance their point of sale displays. One of the benefits to retailers is that there are no visible cables and the lights can be set up at practically any height. Another use that you may have noticed for this style of lights is on boats. Boat owners string them along the outer area to provide lighting at night, so other boats can see them quite clearly. It also provides additional lighting for passengers on larger watercraft’s.

If you are not sure whether a cable lighting kit is what you want, research various lighting systems before purchasing one. The internet can provide consumers with a wealth of information of on types of lighting systems. You could also visit a local lighting store and get some information from the retailers there as well. If you are not comfortable, installing any type of lighting then you can always hire a professional to do the job for you.

Kitchen Lighting Can Be Both Useful and Attractive

October 7th, 2009

If you would like to add drama and interest to a room, lighting is one of the best tools that you can use to contribute to the ambiance of a space. You can highlight it, and define it using many different types of lights such as pendant lighting, recessed lighting, or even rope lighting. Of course, your best option is to install your specialty lighting when your home is being built but sometimes that isn’t possible, especially if you purchase an existing home. Don’t be discouraged though, as many different types of lighting projects can be easily added to a room. If you are a home handyman, you should be able to accomplish most lighting projects on your own, but if you’re not, hire a qualified electrician to do your specialty lighting. Remember, it’s good practice to always check with your local building department to ensure you have the proper permits and your kitchen lighting, bathroom lighting or whatever project you undertake meets local inspection standards.

One favorite trick of designers is to uplight a room. Using pendant lighting or some inexpensive fixtures with only a simple plug-in is required. There are several different and unique discount lighting fixtures available including small adjustable halogen fixtures that can do wonders for a room. You can set these behind a plant or on top of a special piece of furniture or even behind furniture to throw light on a wall or any other special area in that room.

Another great way to do kitchen lighting is to use under-cabinet lighting that brings light directly to a work surface. This job is best left to an electrician as some specialty switching may be involved. You are best off to have your specialty kitchen lighting operating from one switch. And finally, lampshades, although they are somewhat dated, it is amazing what you can do with them in a room. Tricolored shades can be worked in with your décor as might a shade that is lined with a metallic finish. You are limited only by your imagination when it comes to installing specialty lighting in that special room!
